Just a few miles west of Collooney in County Sligo, Annaghmore is the ancestral seat of the O'Hara family, one of the principal Gaelic septs of the region. The present house is a large, handsome Victorian structure, surrounded by woods and mountains in the valley of the Owenmore River, with distant views of Knocknarea, where the huge cairn on the summit is allegedly the burial place of the legendary Queen Maeve. Originally an elegant Regency villa, with three bays of Wyatt windows, a single-storied Ionic porch and simple, single-storey wings, Annaghmore was drastically enlarged between 1860 and 1870 by the Victorian architect James Franklin Fuller, in an unusually restrained classical style. Offers overnight accommodation with dinner and whole-house rentals; groups welcome by arrangement.
