Skalice château is situated in the southern part of the village of Bohumilice and was built in 1549 by Jan Malovec on the site of an older manor. The Malovec family owned the château until 1863, and during their tenure the château underwent a remodelling in the early 19th century, acquiring its late Baroque appearance. The estate and château of Skalice were then purchased by Count František Thun-Hohenstein, and from 1878 the château was owned by the noble Lumbe of Malonic family, who had the north Classicist wing added in 1890. In 1923 Skalice château was purchased by Ferdinand Holoubek, the owner of the Saponia firm in Prague. In 1950, however, the Holoubek family lost the château, forests, and land. Nationalisation followed, and thereafter the estate was administered by the State Farm Vimperk while the château housed apartments. The devastated château was returned in 1996 to the Holoubek family and is now owned by Ferdinand Holoubek's granddaughter, Mrs Zdenka Hiršlová-Voženílková. Under her direction a demanding and sensitive restoration of the entire complex is under way, gradually returning its original beauty not only to the château itself but also to the farm buildings and park. Today the entire château complex together with its extensive park is used as a riding school, which offers horse-riding instruction throughout the year; a visit to some of the château's rooms can also be arranged by prior agreement.
