Between Kroměříž and Vyškov lies the town of Morkovice-Slížany; in the centre of historic Morkovice stands a chateau whose symbiosis with the square suggests the medieval origin of the manorial seat. A manor could have stood here as early as 1222 and is securely attested in 1355. It was connected to the church, and its remains have survived to this day in the fabric of the eastern and northern wings of the present chateau. Among the succession of owners, Jiřík Protivec of Zástřizl stands out, as he rebuilt the old Gothic manor in the more comfortable Renaissance spirit at the end of the 16th century. The early Baroque remodelling of the chateau and garden dates from the period after 1647. Of the further owners, mention should be made of Antonín Braid (late Baroque and Rococo alterations to the chateau) and in particular of Filip Kinský from 1911, under whose ownership significant changes were made to the chateau's appearance (demolition of the western wing, removal of the clock tower, or the filling-in of the water moat). After the Second World War the chateau became state property; the local national committee operated a school, museum, and health centre here. After 1989 the chateau fell into decay; it is currently owned by the company Chapel Invest, which has completed its reconstruction to its present form.
