Reached by a long tree-lined avenue, this imposing five-bay, three-storey-over-basement house stands in a wooded demesne at Lisheenboy, outside Borrisokane, County Tipperary. It features beautifully classical proportions with many original features, including a stunning curving main staircase, white marble fireplaces, cornicing and sash windows. The property includes eight bedrooms, six reception rooms, stone outbuildings and a cottage. Originally known as Lisheenboy House and built in the late 18th century, the site contains evidence of human habitation dating to around the 11th century, including a sunken rectangular walled structure with Bee Boles dated to 1650. The O'Carrolls, Jacobite supporters who fought at the Boyne, owned the lands and built a farmhouse; by the 1730s they had emigrated to America. The Smith family, who arrived from northern England in the late 1600s, added a grander structure between 1750 and 1770, and Milford was completed for a wedding in 1772. The property was sold in 1857 to a local farming family who advocated for Catholic and women's education. In the 20th century ownership changed several times and the house lay empty for fifteen years. The current owners purchased it in 2020 and are undertaking gradual restoration. They offer workspaces for up to eight artists in residence through their Live Art Ireland initiative and are rewilding the remaining seventeen acres. Available as a film location and for whole-house rentals; individual and group visits by arrangement.
