Killineer is a classical Regency house of white stucco, built north of Drogheda in County Louth by George Harpur, a salt trade businessman, and completed in 1836. The principal facade features six bays with a central single-storey Doric porch and formal three-bay fronts. The interior contains a hexagonal entrance hall, an imperial staircase to a top-lit landing, elegant late-Regency plasterwork, and an ante-room with an elaborate plaster ceiling featuring a figure of Justice in high relief. Harpur demolished a smaller 1750s house, leaving one room that became a potting shed in the walled garden. The seventeen-acre gardens include a laurel lawn beneath deciduous woodland, formal Italianate terraces, a large man-made lake as the centrepiece, a classical summerhouse and a wrought iron bridge. The damp-loving plants along the lake shore include a collection of candelabra primulas. Behind the house is a traditional walled kitchen garden with herbaceous borders, vegetable plots, fruit trees, and a glazed nectarine house containing peaches, nectarines and apricots. The house's designer remains unknown due to lost building records. After George Harpur's death in 1888 the estate changed hands frequently before James Carroll purchased it in 1938, and it has passed through his descendants since. Available as a film location; individual and group visits by appointment, with educational visits and looped walks offered.
