Glenville Park in County Cork was originally a seat of the Coppinger family, built on estates acquired from the O'Keeffe clan. The original eighteenth-century house featured a two-storey structure with five bays of blocked Gibbsian architraves and a semicircular forecourt. Dr Edward Hudson purchased the estate in the late 1770s and constructed a large three-storey east-facing range at right angles to the original building, featuring a three-bay pedimented breakfront with central doorcase and fanlight. The estate passed through Hudson's sons, including William Elliot Hudson (1796–1853), a barrister, musician and patriot who collected and transcribed traditional Irish songs. The property was later inherited by their nephew, Edward Hudson-Kinahan, who received a baronetcy in 1887 and commissioned the architect Sandham Symes to extend the house substantially. Symes created a new two-storey building along the entire front, doubling the depth and resulting in a twelve-bay front in a late Victorian Georgian style with two double-height half-hexagonal bows. The interior features a long central hall bisected by an elliptical arch with Victorian plasterwork, culminating in the main staircase. Rooms contain original chimneypieces, wallpaper and Victorian plasterwork. The Hudson-Kinahan family died out with the third baronet, and Colonel Philip Bence-Jones purchased Glenville in 1949 following the destruction by fire of their previous home, Annemount. The Bence-Jones family installed a chapel combining three rooms with stained glass windows by Stanley Tomlin and Patrick Pollen, featuring a stone altar by Seamus Murphy and a Madonna statue. The gardens feature old beech hedges, faded pink brick walls, spectacular rhododendrons and azaleas, specimen shrubs and trees, and a newly created woodland walk. Available as a film location and hosts events including concerts, courses, overnight stays with dinner, and celebrations.
