Castlegarde, located near Pallasgreen on the borders of Limerick and Tipperary, exemplifies a tower house with continuous occupation since medieval times. Tower houses functioned as fortified private residences and typically preceded classic Georgian architecture. Most prevalent in County Limerick, these structures were often enlarged to accommodate evolving owner needs. Castlegarde underwent particularly sympathetic modification and enlargement by the Pain brothers, associates of the renowned architect John Nash, commissioned by Waller O'Grady, younger son of the first Viscount Guillamore.
