William Robertson (1777-1850), a talented Kilkenny architect, designed this early nineteenth-century reinterpretation of a late-Georgian country house for Richard St. George in 1820, replacing his medieval castle. The St Georges are a Norman family established in Ireland since the sixteenth century, active in political and cultural circles; Richard was an M.P. in the Irish Parliament with a town house on Henrietta Street, while his cousin St George Ashe served as Provost of Trinity College. Kilrush features a three-bay facade and five-bay garden front with a hipped roof, widely overhanging eaves, and a single large central chimney-stack. The cut-stone door case displays Doric half-columns and pilasters, supporting a deep entablature with swags beneath a semi-circular leaded fanlight. Ground floor windows are set in shallow recesses with elliptical heads; elevations are otherwise plain. The most notable interior space is the landing, a perfect Doric rotunda supporting a delicately glazed dome, which partly lights the inner hall below. The dining and drawing rooms are finely proportioned with original fittings, furnishings, and wallpaper. The property overlooks mature parkland toward a large mill and contains a tower house (former family residence), a stupendous collection of snowdrops, and an interesting early garden layout with connected canals currently undergoing restoration. Available as a film location, with individual house visits, group visits by arrangement and individual garden visitors welcome.
