Thomas Somerville, a clergyman's son of Scots extraction, leveraged his success in the West India trade to construct a fashionable residence on his West Cork estate. Completed in 1790, Drishane House occupies a clifftop location at the edge of the village of Castletownshend, commanding views over Castlehaven bay. The walls feature slate hanging as weatherproofing against the maritime exposure. The house gained renown as the residence of Edith Oenone Somerville (1858-1949), descendant of Thomas and co-author of Some Experiences of an Irish RM. Available as a film location; offers house and museum visits, whole-house rentals, holiday cottages and event hosting.
